Undercut and Inspired///

So, about a month ago I went ahead and did it - I undercut my hair.  This may be one of the first photos that actually displays it well. I feel like most of the time it just doesn't show up. I really loving it...I tend to get bored with long hair so this feels like such a good way to switch it up and still feel feminine.

Undercut in all it's glory.

Also, does this photo feel similar to the piece I drew below?  I'm taking self portraits of myself for a pen and ink series I'm doing. More to come...

Thankful///

I'm beginning a few new acts of meditation this month.

First, no alcohol...cleansing and saving are in order.

Second, a log of what I'm thankful for, inspired by my friend Danielle. One entry for every day in November. I've heard of people doing this in various ways - I plan on creating a visual representation with drawings from my sketchbook.

Today, November 1st, is Dia De Los Muertos.  A latin holiday in which people come together to celebrate their loved ones who have passed away.

Nov. 1st - Dia De Los Muertos

Today I am thankful for those I have loved and lost.

My grandmother, Mimi, who loved that dogwood tree in front of her house and made sure I can't walk by one without thinking of her. Who would let me do her hair for what seemed like hours on end. Sitting  on the back of the couch I would comb her white hair, filling her head with these silly hair clips she kept in her top drawer, right next to her Original Chapstick in the black tube and mauve lipstick.

My Grandfather, who's games kept up entertained...he'd pinch our toes and say, "little pea, pineroy, rudiwhistle, mariostle..." then with our big toe, "gobble, gobble, gobble." So silly but it's always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him, saying these things in his low scratchy voice. Who with that same voice, told me when I was seventeen on one of our weekly visits to his nursing home, "I thought I'd never see you again." He kiss my cheeks -  he thought I was Mimi.

My aunt Nancy who's love of elephants has transcended into all of her nieces. My collection, which started with some of hers that I inherited, is one of my prized possessions.

Building a Bed

I'm currently bedless and in the process of figuring out a new way to sleep.

I'm thinking I'll reconfigure this look that I've posted about before. We have some extra pallets at work so I'll use a few of those versus the rustic logs. Throw a flokati in between the pallets and my mattress and call it a day. YEP, now I just need a mattress.

Wish Me Luck///

With a heavy heart I write this post.
After close to 3 years of knowing and loving Ketch, we have decided to part ways. It's pretty mutual...which makes me even more sad. I wish we both had more fight in us...I wish he had more fight in him. But this is life. I've taken a lot of good lessons from this relationship - but I can't say that my heart isn't broken, because really honestly? I don't get this deep into a relationship without thinking that person is "the one". He was my perfect, my puzzle piece...my Ketchup.

So posts may not be as frequent for a while...or if I overpost because I need something to keep me busy...I greatly apologize. I hope to keep a somewhat focused view on the world from this little place. Wish me luck.

Best,
Katey

Sunday Sketches

Sorry I've been pretty MIA. A new position on the development team at work has left me feeling like there are zero spaces in my head for blogland at the moment. I spend so much time in front of a computer that all I've been wanting to do lately is sketch, or make things - or just chill.

Sunday night's page in my sketchbook.

I promise I'll be back more frequently as soon as my life gets a little more adjusted.

Crown of Braids

The Open Season fashion show last night totally surpassed my expectations. I was a little under the weather so I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I could have, but beautiful fashion (and some misses too) were prevalent. Thank god there were coolers of Vitamin Water all over to keep me hydrated. I think my 2 girlfriends and those vitamin waters were the only things that made the heat of hundreds of people and standing for 2 hours ok.

I tried out the braids and put my own little twist on it with 3 little bobby pins to hold back my bangs.

The end of the night and a little exhausted looking.

Love having a reason to dress up other than work or a bar thing.

HELLOkatey///oh hey there gym

So I've had a gym membership for...well...forever. But I never went, it was a total waste of money.

Maybe some new workout clothes will help my attitude?

I got a free pass to a different gym closer to my house and work and realized I am truly a creature of convenience. Driving across town to go to the gym? Bummer. Stopping at the gym on my way home from work? No problem.  So I cancelled one membership and started another. I'm spending $5 (a latte and a muffin) more on the gym that's closer to me...which means I'm spending who know how much less on gas. Obviously there is no question which was a better deal in the long run if I'll actually go to this new place.

I have my meeting with a personal trainer next week. Goals Goals Goals will be made. They'll take my measurements, evaluate my BMI and give me a plan for my gym regimen.

My first goal? To actually want to put on some shorts this summer. Wish me luck.

Crocheted Skirts

Debora and I both wore crocheted skirts to work the other day.

I love how they contrast - My cream skirt with black tights and her navy skirt with bare skin.

And no, we didn't plan it.

HELLOvintage///the photographer

Looking a lil haggard after such a long day - the shoot is complete. Phew.

It was so fun to be behind the camera yesterday. If I could style and shoot everyday - man, that would be the life. I was exhausted by the time the shoot was over so my house looks like crazy town - but it was fully worth it. I just keep feeling better and better about what I'm seeing from yesterday's shots.

Loving and appreciating my beautiful friends who offered their time to help get my business up and rolling. You are integral to how successful this venture will be.

Love, Katey

Snippets of Sunday

Aside from a nice little brunch a lot of my day has been spent on my green couch. Research paired with reality tv makes for an excellent Sunday afternoon.

1. Leather wrap bracelets make really cute hair ties.
2. I picked up that glass shade and now am using it as a pretty bell jar for my tillandsia.
3. I went and put a bird on it...does that make me art?
4. Friendship bracelet from my girlfriend who's moving away. Big bowl of tear soup.
5. Zippers make these leggings my favorite and my boyfriends snuggle enemy. I guess they're poky.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAPA

My Dad and I have a bond. We are strangely alike and opposite all at the same time.  We compliment and understand each other. Words are often unneccessary, but still said.  He loves me and shows it in a way that always seems to pull at my heart stings. He is a good Papa. Such a good Papa.

Me and the biggest Oregon Ducks fan I know a couple years back.

Out of 4 girls - I'm the one who goes to games with him, even if it's only once a year these days. We love it. I love it mainly cause I really love him. I love seeing him really get excited and happy about stuff - football is definitely one of those things. I remember not knowing anything about football as a little girl.  I would just stand up when my Dad stood up, cheer when my Dad cheered. The smile he gave me and the way he'd yell "YEAH!!!" just made me keep doing it. That tradition started the day I started cheering and I'm not really planning on ever stopping.

Happy 59th Dad.

My Domestic Things///

Remember how I mentioned that Amanda took some shots of me as well?

Here are 3 of the 18 that she took in my house here in Portland. I haven't seen the rest!

This makes me realize I really need to do something with our vaulted wall. Don't you think?  We had a beautiful tent over our bed for a long time but it slowly fell apart so i took it down.  Maybe just a swath of fabric? A mural with some sort of text? What do you think?

I Take Pictures///Hero On Film

Tristan

My old 35 mm Minolta needed to be brought out for little nephew, Hero (his real name is Tristan, but he came out like a super hero with one arm outstretch - instant nick name). I took some shots in the dim afternoon light of their hospital room.  Grainy love.

The beautiful new family.
