I'm beginning a few new acts of meditation this month.

First, no alcohol...cleansing and saving are in order.

Second, a log of what I'm thankful for, inspired by my friend Danielle. One entry for every day in November. I've heard of people doing this in various ways - I plan on creating a visual representation with drawings from my sketchbook. 

Today, November 1st, is Dia De Los Muertos.  A latin holiday in which people come together to celebrate their loved ones who have passed away.

Nov. 1st - Dia De Los Muertos

Today I am thankful for those I have loved and lost. 

My grandmother, Mimi, who loved that dogwood tree in front of her house and made sure I can't walk by one without thinking of her. Who would let me do her hair for what seemed like hours on end. Sitting  on the back of the couch I would comb her white hair, filling her head with these silly hair clips she kept in her top drawer, right next to her Original Chapstick in the black tube and mauve lipstick. 

My Grandfather, who's games kept up entertained...he'd pinch our toes and say, "little pea, pineroy, rudiwhistle, mariostle..." then with our big toe, "gobble, gobble, gobble." So silly but it's always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him, saying these things in his low scratchy voice. Who with that same voice, told me when I was seventeen on one of our weekly visits to his nursing home, "I thought I'd never see you again." He kiss my cheeks -  he thought I was Mimi.

My aunt Nancy who's love of elephants has transcended into all of her nieces. My collection, which started with some of hers that I inherited, is one of my prized possessions.

Just got this roll scanned in from the holidays last year and our road trip from Oregon to California. Looking at these photos and seeing holiday commercials on the tv are making me happy. It's only Halloween and all this cheer just makes me want to savor this holiday season. I'm ready to breath in every spice, cooking smell and fresh pine scent I can.

Bits of My Holiday Weekend

I spent this last weekend with very good friends. It was perfection.

We found this amazing garage door in southeast Portland while garage sale-ing. HOLY COW! The woman said she painted it 10 years ago and it is still so beautiful and vibrant. I bet her neighbors thought she was crazy, I thought she was a genius.

My fabulous old roommate, Libby, is in town from Indianapolis.  We suprised her at the airport with a cardboard sign and a bottle of champagne...(never) too much ruckus ensued. We then spent the 4th getting lost on the Sandy river...

...and relaxing with my old friend, Tecate. 

 

We fought the masses on the Hawthorne bridge later in the night for front front row views of the fireworks over the river.

A Valentines Tent///

This past Saturday, as an early Valentine's Day treat for Ketch, I turned our bedroom into a romantic tent. It's so funny 'cause yesterday there seemed to be posts all over the place about making indoor tents out of blankets and other things around the house.  I guess we were all in the mood for good 'ol  inexpensive romance.

Tons of pillows and blankets draped over the bed made it uber cozy. I used a staple gun to hang a set of lace curtains and other various linens from the house over our bed. We have lath and plaster walls so putting big hooks in the walls to string up the blankets and sheets was not an option. The staple gun made it so easy. I just made sure to staple along seams so I wasn't putting holes in the middle of my curtains.  Once the tent was up I pulled the curtains back with wooden clothes pins for a view of the tv - but when you get rid of the pins the curtains close and it's our own little gypsy tent.

I strung twinkle lights over the top of the tent to make it glow. Some Ikea curtains I had laying around were a perfect tent roof.

I also used my Marconi bulb that I bought forever ago to add some extra ambiance. 

 This was such a fun surprise. I ended up ordering Thai food and we ate it in our little tent while watching some movies and snugglin all night long.

The funniest thing is that he likes the tent so much, I don't know if I'll ever be allowed to take it down.
