Today's Chalkboard

Started a new piece at the Schoolhouse Electric Factory and Showroom today in Portland. 

It's always a somewhat meditational experience washing away the old art for something new. Having a craft that is impermanent and very of-the-moment has helped me with getting rid of a lot more than expired chalkboards.

Sometimes planning on paper is necessary by playing around with scale and typography is important. When you're working on something that's so large it's hard to get a grasp for what it will really look like when people see it because you're so close as you're drawing the actual piece.

 Today is left looking like a blue print...

Nubby Twiglet and a familiar chalkboard ///

So fun to see so many bloggers spreading the word about Schoolhouse and all of our new products and our new showroom. I came across the Nubbytwiglet blog today and was so excited to see my chalkboard photographed.

As it says on the chalkboard, very exciting, Anna Mara Flowers and Ristretto Roasters will be part of our showroom by our Grand Opening on December. 1st.

Styling with Schoolhouse Electric///PART ONE

Schoolhouse Electric launched our new line of home goods and furniture this past week. Have you seen? I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this company. I had the opportunity to assistant style our catalog photo shoot this past summer here in Portland at our factory and a house in SW.

Im so happy to finally unveil the images that I am so proud to have helped create.

This image is from our catalog insert that was shot by the uber talented Shawn Records - (my arm, haha, and) an inspiration board I created with the lifestyle team. 

I learned so much from the amazing stylist Lili Diallo with whom I had the awesome opportunity to work. 

"Every shot needs a little bit of kook..."  ♥

The shot on the left was my absolute favorite to style. From the bike in the entry way to the arrow poised on the side of the vase.

Eggpress///Schoolhouse Electric's New Tenant

Loving the photos from Portland's own Work Place. They recently highlighted Egg Press, a local letterpress company who's beautiful studio space is located in the new Schoolhouse Electric factory on 21st and Nicolai.

I had the pleasure of working with Kara and Tess over the summer while developing some of our new products at Schoolhouse and can't say enough good things about them - two uber genuine people overflowing with positive energy, style and design talents.

"They recently partnered with Schoolhouse Electric and Adam Arnold (talk about a dream team..) to create some unique and wonderfully Portland-esque slip covers, which will soon be available through Schoolhouse Electric's new retail space."

Chalkboard Art///

This week I was assigned the task of doing the chalkboard art for our new showroom that will be opening up Nov. 7th. 

I repainted the chalkboard with a couple coats of chalkboard spray paint and did a chalk layer that I then rubbed off.  This gives the chalkboard some grip so there aren't slippery spots that can mess up one's artwork.

Simple supplies: Chalkpens, high quality chalk pastels and classic chalkboard chalk for the beginning outline work.

Planning sheet and pen testing.

Laying out the artwork to scale with some lines.

I then went over the chalk with a white chalk pen that gives the chalkboard a really clean appearance that is impossible with normal chalk.

Once the art is outlined with chalk pen and filled in with pastels all of the beginning rough outlines get wiped away.

I then went around the logo with black chalk pastels to really make the white pop.

Moments of Monday

1. Clogs, levi's and denim shirt /// it's so nice being able to wear the clothes I like to work.

2. Monday morning coffee is a given///fielding what feel like 100's of phone calls on lighting questions requires regular trips to the coffee maker. Oh, and I like coffee with my cream.

3. Lipstick is a new addition to my makeup routine /// Right now I'm trying out a dark browny-mauve.

4. & 5.Erin and I both were pulled a "Denim Dan Day" - light denim on top, dark on the bottom. BOOM. God I love my Canadian tuxedo.

We just got a new glass shade in at Schoolhouse Electric that will be a perfect little atrium for my crystal keepsakes.

Working Like A Dog

Just another day at the office. 

 

This photo from the people at Free People makes me think that two dogs are better than one at the work place.  Maybe it's time for me to get a pup?

These were the words spoken by the General Manager Michelle during my interview at Schoolhouse Electric today. It was interview number two. Keep your fingers, knees and toes crossed for me.
