Refresher Course in Being OK///

So, January is always a rough month for me. This year seemed to be incredibly so as I spent my first holiday season truly single since I was 18. I didn't think it would be as rough as it ended up being. I'm very much a fly by the seat of my pants - live life to the fullest type of person. Happy and motivated and a big lover of all. This time of year however is where I usually take inventory of my life - what I'm doing currently, where I've been and where I'm going. 1 Year, 5 years, 10 years...will I be happy if I'm on a similar path? My usual answer is no. As a true Aquarian I constantly find myself on a very individual journey that I try to share with people as much as possible, even if I'm not good at it. It's a journey that if I perceive as stagnant or at least static usually sends me into a spiral of depression come January. This also usually has to do with the fact that the weather is shit and we all need Vitamin D to feel good. My birthday also comes in early February - a new year...another birthday on the horizon - what have I accomplished? I will admit that yes - this a poor pitiful me time of year, where I am harder on myself than I ever need to be. The worst part being that this year it physically manifested itself in the form of an indescribable migraine.

But the beautiful thing is that I am already seeing the urge to come out of my winter hibernation and get out of this cave of self pity and depression.

With no one else to lean on I found myself talking to my Mom - something I feel like I haven't really done in years. Yesterday she came to Portland and having her close was simply all I needed. She helped me realize the satisfaction that comes with the love only family can give. We took a nap together and as a nearly 27 year old woman, spooning up against my Mama, I have not felt more comfort in a very long time. I feel like the headache reached it's pinnacle last night and tonight I am feeling better both physically and emotionally. That headache was me purging this pain...letting go of all of the self doubt and anger that filled the holes that arrived when I was forced to let go of the things that I loved. We all know we need to grow up and let go of things that aren't good for us. I thought I had gotten over it all - the holidays made me realize I'd been holding on to a lot, picking at emotional wounds and not letting them heal. These wounds will leave some scars, no doubt. But I'm pretty sure I'm ready to stop picking. We are stronger because we go through these realizations and can appreciate what we have and what sticks around.

I'm ready to be proactive again. Ready to stop beating a dead horse.

January necessities - so many layers are needed this month - even when it comes to accessories.

(Vintage brass earrings, a feather charm necklace made from an old earring, Crystal Noir by Versace, cheap black gloves, tortoiseshell specks for indoors and out - the eyeglasses are Reynolds and the shades are vintage, 5 year diary, vintage leather/metal/wood bangles, black mardi gras beads, rings old and new)

My favorite new piece is this little 5 year diary. Just an inch of space per a day, per year - all 5 years on one page. Can't wait to look back on all of this. Wondering where I'll be 5 years from now...

My collection of rings are number 2 - the love ring is a gift from one of my best friends and a staple, the turquoise is new as of the holidays and the button ring was made by my roommate...in love. (Sparkly nailpolish for good measure - jazz hands)

Portland///Old & New

Holy cow - Portland is doing some rad things. I truly love living in this city. Check out this beautiful Victorian that has been renovated by London transplants, the Dickinson Family.

Portland is full of beautiful old homes like this one in NW. I personally live in a very quirky, purple version that is over a century old. Every room has doors and is contained to keep it warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer. It is cozy but the rooms are small and it can be dark depending on the season. I think some people may fain away from mixing styles in such a zealous manner - feeling that they should stick with the original aesthetic of the home. But does that really work with modern life? Preserving historic homes is wonderful, but nothing is static. Expanding on the original design and making it functional for modern day living, to me, is what design is all about. I love how they've opened up a home that would have historically felt cramped to feel open and spacious. I also love how the mix of old and new in architecture lends to the same ideals in the Interior Design of the space.

It didn't take us long to string up my old tattered flag and made a day of ot shooting footage for a film Libby is working on while Cat and I snapped photos on our various cameras and iPhones. It was clear and crisp and completely wind free. Which on the Oregon coast = magic.

Schoolhouse Electric launched our new line of home goods and furniture this past week. Have you seen? I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this company. I had the opportunity to assistant style our catalog photo shoot this past summer here in Portland at our factory and a house in SW.

Im so happy to finally unveil the images that I am so proud to have helped create.

This image is from our catalog insert that was shot by the uber talented Shawn Records - (my arm, haha, and) an inspiration board I created with the lifestyle team.

I learned so much from the amazing stylist Lili Diallo with whom I had the awesome opportunity to work.

The shot on the left was my absolute favorite to style. From the bike in the entry way to the arrow poised on the side of the vase.

So, about a month ago I went ahead and did it - I undercut my hair. This may be one of the first photos that actually displays it well. I feel like most of the time it just doesn't show up. I really loving it...I tend to get bored with long hair so this feels like such a good way to switch it up and still feel feminine.

I'm beginning a few new acts of meditation this month.

First, no alcohol...cleansing and saving are in order.

Second, a log of what I'm thankful for, inspired by my friend Danielle. One entry for every day in November. I've heard of people doing this in various ways - I plan on creating a visual representation with drawings from my sketchbook.

Today, November 1st, is Dia De Los Muertos. A latin holiday in which people come together to celebrate their loved ones who have passed away.

Nov. 1st - Dia De Los Muertos

Today I am thankful for those I have loved and lost.

My grandmother, Mimi, who loved that dogwood tree in front of her house and made sure I can't walk by one without thinking of her. Who would let me do her hair for what seemed like hours on end. Sitting on the back of the couch I would comb her white hair, filling her head with these silly hair clips she kept in her top drawer, right next to her Original Chapstick in the black tube and mauve lipstick.

My Grandfather, who's games kept up entertained...he'd pinch our toes and say, "little pea, pineroy, rudiwhistle, mariostle..." then with our big toe, "gobble, gobble, gobble." So silly but it's always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him, saying these things in his low scratchy voice. Who with that same voice, told me when I was seventeen on one of our weekly visits to his nursing home, "I thought I'd never see you again." He kiss my cheeks - he thought I was Mimi.

My aunt Nancy who's love of elephants has transcended into all of her nieces. My collection, which started with some of hers that I inherited, is one of my prized possessions.

I had the pleasure of working with Kara and Tess over the summer while developing some of our new products at Schoolhouse and can't say enough good things about them - two uber genuine people overflowing with positive energy, style and design talents.

Chalkboard Art///

This week I was assigned the task of doing the chalkboard art for our new showroom that will be opening up Nov. 7th.

I repainted the chalkboard with a couple coats of chalkboard spray paint and did a chalk layer that I then rubbed off. This gives the chalkboard some grip so there aren't slippery spots that can mess up one's artwork.

Simple supplies: Chalkpens, high quality chalk pastels and classic chalkboard chalk for the beginning outline work.

Planning sheet and pen testing.

Laying out the artwork to scale with some lines.

I then went over the chalk with a white chalk pen that gives the chalkboard a really clean appearance that is impossible with normal chalk.

Once the art is outlined with chalk pen and filled in with pastels all of the beginning rough outlines get wiped away.

I then went around the logo with black chalk pastels to really make the white pop.

Come check it out Nov. 7th in the new showroom on 21st and Nicolai in Porltand!

It's something that I will always love and will always make me think of her...that and Chanel No.5.

I love this series of photographs from the book, A Shade of Red, by photographer Alyson Fox. Women from all stages of life, all who I'm sure have their own love stories or stigmas associated with red lipstick. It's something only girls (and drag queens) can understand.
