NEWS /// HELLOvintage COMING SOON!

There it is! The news is out!  My vintage shop is opening May 2011 online.

HELLOvintage will carry home goods as well as men's and women's clothing with an eclectic edge.

I've been scouring Portland, OR for beautiful vintage pieces for the last year.  Each item is hand picked by me and something I would put in my own home or on my own body, no questions asked. These pieces are beautiful, fun and have personalities of their own.

I'm really excited and hope you are too!

Love, Katey

Dude #1 Beard Oil///

Gonna go grab a snag a whiff of this stuff on my lunch break today over at Nationale. Ketch doesn't wear scent. he seems to be somewhat opposed to it. But I love scent and maybe that fact that this isn't technically cologne...he'd be into it?

He cleans up real nice, I promise.

I let you know how it is!

Home///Vintage Globes

I've been on the search for the perfect globe forever! I keep debating over whether I want a free standing version or a table top version. But what about a glowing version from the 60's?

I am absolutely in love with this 60's globe light from Gallivangting Girl's etsy shop. Totally different than the standard globe you'd keep on a desk. The clear plastic base is actually really neat! I grew up with a cheesy 90's version that I cracked rough housing one day. The cracked night light stayed around a little longer and then mysteriously disappeared after my mom cleaned my room one day. I've wanted a replacement globe ever since.

A Dance for One

From 3 to 13 my life revolved around ballet. Every week I had multiple classes. My little lean body was truly that of a dancer. When a social life and hip hop dance became more important than being a prima ballerina, I left classical dancing behind. When I see beautiful representations of ballet like this film - it makes me wish I could go back.

Bright Socks///Inspired By Charlie

I've talked about my love for socks before - and a love for colorful socks at that. But Charlie's Monday Inspiration post just reiterated for me how perfect they are for RIGHT NOW as we transition into somewhat warmer weather.

Charlie was inspired by Ingrid's super duper cute yellow socks. They totally remind me of the Crew Cuts catalog from fall.

Y'all have to know about Sock Dreams. It's probably the best spot to grab socks ever and happens to be located here in Portland. But they also have a rad web shop too.

Tons of bright colors that would be so cute peeping out of a pair of oxfords like Ingrid's.

Stunning///jensen-conroy

I am completely in awe of the styling and photography in this shoot for jensen-conroy jewelry.

I love the geometric feel of their jewelry and how they integrated that into the props. The braids and female form that add such beautiful organic elements juxtaposed against triangles, circles and squares.

So beautiful.

A Very Thrifty Weekend

Spent some time shopping here in Portland this weekend and scored some awesome items for our house.

White tulip base table is now a record stand in my bedroom.

White director's chairs (there are technically 2).  For now it sits in my bedroom - but once the sun comes out it will sit in my backyard.
(Because I found a black vinyl vintage Steelcase chair to replace it!!!)

Missing Haley Ann

I'm missing my Haley girl...and seeing her artwork (window displays...show flyers...) all over Portland. She moved down to LA at the beginning of the year and I haven't seen her since. I need some cheap flight recommendations. STAT.

Engagement Photo Shoots///♥ and 1974

Jessi and John - where to start, where to start.  I feel priveledged to know these two amazingly positive and creative Portland souls. Jessi is one of those girls that just has "that spark(le)" and John (equally sparkly) picked up on that. They are now engaged and "team mates for life", as Jessi likes to put it. They compliment each other in ways I have seen few couples do - together they are Creatives, super business savvy, fashionable, successful and most importantly; a blast to hang out with.

When I saw their engagement shoot today I knew everyone else out there had to see it too. Jessi aptly called the shoot Love & 1974. The two spent the day in downtown Portland's Ace Hotel decked out in their parent's vintage swag. The fuschia dress is what John's mom wore when leaving for her own honeymoon 40 years ago. Aww, these two...hip and sentimental! The beautiful photos were taken by Amanda K Photography who literally captured J&J's personalities with her camera.

Check out more shots on Jessi's Blog and the entire shoot here .

This rustic bathroom is stunning. The reclaimed sink kills me - I die. Retrouvius Reclamation and Design out of London is the genius behind this space.

A little love///

My dear friend Ashley of We Are Electricity made the sweetest post about HelloKatey yesterday.

She is also a craft master artist extraordinaire and my old roommate. Jewelry, rockstar needlepoint and custom pinatas are some of her recent ventures. How beautiful is she modeling one of her bracelets? And check out her drool worthy bangs!

Twisted Buns Turn Into Perfect Loose Curls///

A while back I posted about this great tutorial for 3 messy buns.  I've been doing this style a lot lately because it is sooo easy!

From Buns to Rachel Bilson style curls.

But the best benefit? Loose beautiful curls the next day. I have stick straight hair naturally and even my hair will keep the curl with this method. I even will just put them in at night (I have a tough head) and the curls just turn out more like beautiful loose waves the next morning.

To Achieve Beautiful Loose Curls:

1. Follow the twisted buns hair tutorial. Hair can be wet or dry.

2. Allows buns to be in for at least 8 hours (a full work day or a full nights sleep)

3. Take out bobby pins and allow buns to naturally fall.

4. Use your fingers to separate each curl (there are three).

5. I use a silicon gel on my roots to help with bed head flyaways and spray the curls with a light hair spray to set.

These loose curls that start at your jaw line look totally rad with balayage.

ENJOY!

Wedges For The Big Day///

My friend Ashley of We Are Electricity asked me what wedges I would recommend for a friend to wear at her wedding. Ash said she'll be walking over grass so she needs something that won't sink into the lawn - hence, wedges do seem like the perfect option.
The only store that came to mind because they simply carry the best stock of platform and wedge dress shoes out there is Solestruck. The coolest part is they are actually a local Portland store that happens to carry some of the freshest shoes on the market and they have a rad site.

The Sechelles Stroke of Genius is totally 60's classic bride and reminds me of the wedding scene in the movie The Graduate. But for something a little more casual and dance-the-night-away-worthy the BCBGirls Limber (almost a flat) wedge is super simple and sweet. The nude color is super in right now and I could see them almost dissappearing gracefully beneath a floor length gown.

Grey wedges would be an amazing and really hip option. Whether you are a classic girl a la Charlotte from Sex and the City and go with the peep toe Chinese Laundry or an ethereal rocker with a wild side and choose the Dolce Vita Pela (my favorite), each would be a stunning and surprising shoe.

Then there's the girl that wants to have a shoe that pops. The wedding photos will definitely focus around these puppies. What doesn't pop more than red?! Again - a classic option in the DKNY and a wild card in the Dolce Vita.

I would totally get married in any of these. Even a simple black version of these would be totally hot under a white wedding gown and Solestruck has a LOT of these styles in other rad colors as well.

Oh weddings, so exciting.
